Tall Tales (Film by Attila Szász, 2019)

The ELTE–NFI FILMIO University Film Club screening and discussion series continues. We welcome university members from all ELTE faculties.

According to the story, months after World War II, chaos and uncertainty reign in Hungary. Hundreds and thousands of relatives are trying to find information – typically through newspaper ads – about family members who were drafted into military service and have long since been missing. The title refers to these classified ads, in which people searched for their missing or deported loved ones. Our protagonist is a con artist who tries to profit from this; he seeks out such advertisers, posing as a fellow soldier of the person they are searching for, and attempts to reassure them with false information, then unscrupulously pockets the food, a few days’ lodging, fine clothes and other gifts offered in gratitude. One of his attempts, however, goes awry, forcing him to flee Pest; a mysterious woman and her son offer him refuge deep in the forest. While wrestling with his demons of war, he becomes entangled in a passionate love affair with the woman, whose husband could return from the front at any moment. This historical romantic thriller from the creators of Demimonde and Eternal Winter, both screened at the film club last semester, promises plenty of excitement, twists and emotion.
