Autumn Festival of Museums in our library

In the frame of the Autumn Festival of Museums, between the 13th of October and the 10th of November 2023, we invite all science and book lovers to take part in our programmes and visit our exhibition entitled Unus non sufficit orbis – One world is not enough: Hungarian Jesuits in South America.

Our guests can take part in interactive guided tours of the Eötvös exhibition, as well as guided tours of the restoration workshop and the library history. Our book presentations will give you an insight into the special treasures of our library. All visitors are welcome!

Restoration workshop

Guided by our restorer, guests can get a taste of paper-casting and bookbinding techniques. They will learn about the process of book disinfection and old bookbinding techniques.

Unus non sufficit orbis – One world is not enough: Hungarian Jesuits in South America

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of György Pray, the father of Hungarian critical historiography and former director of our library, and the 250th anniversary of the abolition of the Jesuit order, we invite you to an exhibition of documents related to the missions of the Hungarian Jesuits in South America.

The exhibition offers visitors a special selection of manuscripts and printed documents. The South American continent was one of the main scenes of the Jesuit Order's flourishing in the 18th century. It was one of the most important places where the most enthusiastic and adventurous members of the Jesuit Order, including Jesuits of Hungarian origin, carried out their missionary work. If you want to know what adventures the friars had in the depths of the jungle, how they canoed down the Amazon or what experiences they had among the Indians, visit our exhibition!

The exhibition is available on weekdays between 10.00 and 15.00. Registration is possible at titkarsag@lib.elte.hu.

Virtual Autumn Walks in the ELTE University Library and Archives (continuously available online programme).

Photo, audio and video recordings will be made of the events. The recordings will be published on the websites, publications, forums and social media of the participating institutions.

A graphic from the ELTE University Library has been exhibited

On 12 June 2024 - The Petőfi Literary Museum's exhibition entitled "Halcyon Days - Fashion and Culture in Reform-Age Pest" opened, featuring an engraving depicting George Sand which was loaned from the ELTE University Library and Archives. The exhibition explores the relationship between dress, social life, press and literary publicity in the 1840s. Petra Török, the acting director, welcomed the audience at the opening. The exhibition was inaugurated by Anna Fábri, followed by a costume performance. The exhibition is open until 31 March 2025.

Mini exhibition – The 20th anniversary of Hungary's accession to the European Union

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Hungary's accession to the European Union, a chamber exhibition is waiting for the interested visitors in the lobby of the ELTE SEK, using materials from the ELTE EKL Savaria Library and Archives and the European Documentation Centre.

The display cases contain documents related to the theme, while the screens show a list of the most important EU-funded projects and pictures of the projects that our institution has won over the last 20 years. The exhibition, which also includes free publications on the subject, is open until the 10th of May 2024.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is 20 years old - exhibition

The Faculty of Social Sciences is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

On November 9, an all-day festive conference took place, which was also connected to a faculty history exhibition.

Some objects were displayed at the exhibition:

publications since the establishment of the Faculty (both in the form of posters and books);
small printouts related to the Faculty (admission information booklets, Doctoral School information booklets, student magazines – Kistáska TÁTKontúr);
ex-libris (in the form of posters) in the books in the Faculty Library;
teachers’ and professors’ nameplates that were previously used in the buildings on Pollack Mihály tér and Múzeum körút;
and a briefcase used by Tibor Huszár.

The exhibition can be viewed in the lobby of the conference room in the basement of building A of the Lágymányosi Campus.

Since the historical documents and objects already in the Library's holdings and those that came to us this year were collected and organized in connection with the anniversary, the management of the Faculty decided, at the suggestion of the head of the library, to create a separate Faculty History Collection.

Pécs–Debrecen–Szeged, Kuno Klebelsberg and Hungarian higher education – Traveling exhibition in the University Library and Archives

The exhibition was made by the staff of the University Library and Knowledge Center of the University of Pécs on the 90th anniversary of the death of Kuno Klebelsberg (1875–1932), a politician of education, in 2022.

Kuno Klebelsberg placed great emphasis on relocating the universities that had been moved beyond the border of Hungary after the Treaty of Trianon. The Franz Joseph University of Cluj-Napoca found a new home in Szeged, while the Elizabeth University of Bratislava found a new home in Pécs. Subsequently, as Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, he made significant improvements to the infrastructure of rural universities in Szeged, Pécs and Debrecen. In addition to the university construction projects in the three cities, the panels on display also present the Collegium Hungaricum institutional network founded by Kuno Klebelsberg, as well as the higher education scholarships and summer universities.

The traveling exhibition of the University of Pécs will be on display for the following month from the 24th of April 2023 in the hall of the ELTE University Library and Archives. The exhibition is free of charge, if you are not a registered reader, please indicate your intention to visit the exhibition at the entrance.

Book, gown, science – Symbols from the past of Eötvös Loránd University

On the 17th of September 2022, as part of the Cultural Heritage Days, the University Library and Archives’ new exhibition was opened, presenting the most important documents and symbols of our university’s history.

The exhibition includes documents, pictures and objects ranging from Péter Pázmány’s founding charter to the ornate article of law issued for the university’s 300th anniversary. A virtual exhibition on a tablet in the room traces the history of the university's symbols up to the present day. The ELTE Alumni Centre supported the event by providing a stand for the tablet displaying the virtual exhibition.

Dr. Kulcsár Szabó Ernőné Gombos Annamária, Director General of the University Library and Archives, welcomed the participants of the opening ceremony, and then Csilla Pataky, Head of the Alumni Centre, briefly described the importance and the functioning of the Alumni organisation. The exhibition was opened by Dr. László Szögi, the former director general of the University Library and Archives, who emphasized in his speech, that every institution needs to explore its past and preserve its tangible memories, therefore it is of particular importance, that the university’s founding charters, emblems and symbols of the university are on display in the exhibition.

Exhibition of Books on Medicine at the ELTE University Library and Archives

The ELTE University Library and Archives invites you to visit our exhibition of books on medicine, which opened on this year's Night of Museums.

The 16th century was one of the most important periods in the development of medicine. The first anatomical and botanical nomenclatures, anatomical atlases with detailed illustrations based on dissections and prescription books with pictures of medicinal plants were published. Such volumes have been selected from the 16th century collection of the University Library. The exhibition is open on weekdays by appointment at titkarsag@lib.elte.hu. All visitors are welcome!

Successful Night of Museums at the ELTE University Library and Archives

According to our tradition, this year we joined the Night of Museums series of events, which included craft activities, concerts, guided tours, restoration workshops and an exhibition of books on medicine.

The programme opened with a concert by the ELTE „Eötvös” Art Ensemble String Quartet in the Aula, featuring works by Mozart, Grieg, Debussy, Elgar, Fauré and Delibes.

Through our building tours, visitors were given an insight into the history of the library and the rooms of the historic building. They were also able to learn about the restoration process, our museum collection, the life and work of Loránd Eötvös and create unique hardcover books. During our events, István Ádám gave guitar concerts in the lobby, introducing our guests to the mysteries of music literature.

This year's events also included a presentation of the Perczel Globe. Dr. László Zentai, Vice-Rector for Education and Academic Affairs of Eötvös Loránd University, gave a lecture on the history of the globe.

The exhibition entitled „Fu magh kit az patikaba ugian sesamusnak hinak”, a collection of our books on medicine, was opened and can be visited by appointment on weekdays at titkarsag@lib.elte.hu.

Exhibition of Books on Medicine

On the Night of the Museums the exhibition of our medical books offers an insight into our museum collection. The opening of the exhibition will take place on the 25th of June from 19.00 in our Boardroom (1053 Budapest, Ferenciek tere 6.) on the second floor.

The 16th century was one of the most important periods in the development of medicine. The first anatomical and botanical nomenclatures, anatomical atlases based on dissections and illustrated with detailed diagrams, and prescription books with pictures of medicinal plants were published. We have displayed a selection of such volumes from the 16th century collection of the University Library. Detailed programmes are available here, on our homepage and on the Night of Museums' website.
