Second CHARM-EU Open Science Day

The CHARM-EU Open Science Day program will be held for the second time on October 26, 2023, which is a continuation of the first session. You can join the event in person in ELTE's Aula Magna (1053 Budapest, Egyetem tér 1–3.) or online via the Teams platform.

University/faculty leaders, representatives of partner universities, researchers, lecturers and PhD students of partner universities, employees of the Open Science offices, and participants of Pilot 2, Pilot 3 and Pilot 4 can register for the event.

The morning session will discuss how institutions can support researchers in relation to Open Science activities, and the afternoon session will provide researchers and staff with ready-to-use skills related to Open Access publishing.

The event is free, but prior registration is required. A detailed program description and registration is available on the Charm-EU website.

Welcome new students! – University Library Service

The network of libraries maintained by Eötvös Loránd University, the University Library Service (eltekonyvtarak.elte.hu/en), with more than 4.3 million documents, wishes you a successful autumn semester.

Enrollment is free for all university citizens, and can also be arranged online through the ELTE Library WebApp application. The collection of libraries is available from the online catalog.

The ELTE University Library and Archives welcomes all students in the heart of the city centre, on Ferenciek Square. You can find information about the services available in each library, the tariffs, opening hours and contact details, as well as the many online services of ELTE libraries on the website of the University Library Service.

New generation loan experience

After several years of preparation, self-service borrowing and return based on radio frequency identification became available in our library.

In the past two years, more than 200 000 documents have been RFID tagged, allowing books to be borrowed in seconds without the help of a librarian at the dedicated terminals. After identification with a library card, you can simply place all the documents you want to borrow in the designated area of the terminal. After automatic recognition, the system validates the loan and sends an e-mail or prints a paper receipt.

Two terminals have been installed in our building, one in the lobby and one at the circulation desk. Besides the lending service, these self-service terminals allow you to check out live loans and extend deadlines. The device in the lobby also offers the possibility of returning books beyond the opening hours of the library, during the time period when the building is open.

The installation of the devices is part of a four-year university-wide development, which started in 2021. Coordinated by the University Library and Archives, the new service will be continuously available in the member libraries of the University Library Service (faculty, dormitory libraries). The innovative technology supports not only lending but also library background work, including automatic inventories.

We wish all visitors to enjoy using the new devices.

Settlement of library debts

In order to increase the efficiency of library services, according to Article 137/A of the Student Requirements Regulation, effective from the 1 st of October 2022, the condition for taking endof-semester examinations and registering for the next semester is the payment of the library overdue fee in the libraries of the University Library Service. Final examinations may only be taken after the return of borrowed books by the deadline and the payment of library debts.

We hope that the modification of the Student Requirements System will contribute to a more efficient service of our libraries and of the required and recommended literature.

You can check your borrowings and outstanding debt by using the access link here.

Borrowed library documents can also be returned to the libraries by personal delivery or by post. For information on the opening hours and addresses of ELTE libraries, please visit the websites at eltekonyvtarak.elte.hu/en. For more information on settling overdue fees by bank transfer, please, click here.

Several convenience services are available for monitoring loan periods and overdue fees:

a reminder e-mail is sent two days before the loan deadline;
by logging in to ELTEfind, you can review your outstanding debts and library loans;
using the latest ELTE Library WebApp, all our readers can view their loans, overdue fees and set up their own personal notifications of the expiry date on their smartphones.

All of our member libraries offer multiple options (in person, email, phone, web, app) to indicate a renewal request and pay an overdue fee, helping to avoid overdue loans and increased late fees.

Reporting Day K21 – Results in the light of quality improvement

At the second quarterly report of the K21 Quality Coordination Committee 2024, the leaders of the working groups reported on the results of the past quarter, ongoing work and changes.

The University Library Service (ULS) Quality Improvement Report and the Non-Compliant Services Report were completed and approved. The Accessible Library Working Group has reviewed and modified the Guide to Facilities and Rules for Serving Readers with Disabilities in ULS Libraries. The document has been uploaded to EDIT and is now available to all ULS librarians. 

The Primary Research Working Group has started to evaluate the data of the 2024 Student Needs and Satisfaction Survey provided by the ELTE Quality Office and is continuously revising the text on surveys in the Quality Handbook. The Process Management Working Group has also made suggestions for the Library Process Control chapter of the Quality Handbook and will hold a meeting to discuss the modification of the Process Management and Process Audit forms.

The Communication Working Group provided information on the tasks and achievements of the K21 Quality Coordination Committee through our website, newsletter and short film entitled 3 months – 3 minutes, and contributed to the success of the preparation and administration of the K21 reporting days meetings. The Green Library Working Group has continued a review of the environmental awareness survey.

The library leaders held five meetings in the second quarter to discuss, among other things, the new communication strategy and the ULS-CHANGE newsletter, the current tasks of the EISZ 2025 order, the schedule for uploading theses from the previous academic year to EDIT and related tasks, and the development of the new thesis repository. The leaders reviewed and updated their library assimilation documents and attended a two-day leadership training in mid-May. The ULS Strategy Workshop took place on the 18th and 19th of June 2024, during which the mission statement and vision of the ULS and the tasks related to the strategic objectives were finalised.

An update on the achievements of the K21 Quality Coordination Committee and our new developments will be posted on our website soon.

Strategic workshop for quality improvement

On the 18th and 19th of June 2024, the staff of the ELTE University Library Service (ULS) participated in a workshop on quality development led by Dr. Attila Szoboszlai, trainer.

During the two days, ELTE librarians developed a new vision and mission statement. The strategic objectives of the ULA for the next three years were defined.

Another ELTE FoH journals win „MTMT Qualified journal” title

The Repository Certification Committee of the MTMT (Magyar Tudományos Művek Tára = Hungarian Science Bibliography - the database of Hungarian scientific publications) issued certificates to the Elpis Journal of Philosophical Sciences based on the submitted certification requests.

The journal Elpis was founded in 2007, it operates from 2017 as Elpis Journal of Philosophical Sciences, the open-access, peer-reviewed, periodical journal of the Doctoral School of Philosophical Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE, Budapest). It is acknowledged by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences: it is listed on the "accepted journals" of the Philosophical Comittee of the II. Department.

The primary mission of the journal is talent management, providing a forum for young colleagues in the field of philosophy. It deem it particularly important to ensure an appreciative reception for Hungarian philosophical books and encourage philosophical debates regarding actual problems.

The qualification protocol is used on journals’ publishing practices that either publish in online database-based software, are open access or delayed open access. During the procedure, the journal's quality control process (peer review) and the practice of informing potential authors and readers are examined. The purpose of the certification is to support the work of the editorial offices, to promote the uniform operation of domestic web journals, which also ensures the automatic data uploading of the bibliographic data of the articles into MTMT.

Currently, 21 journals have this qualification, and 6 of them are affiliated with the ELTE Faculty of Humanities.

We heartily congratulate the editorial board of the certified journals, as well as the authors published in the journals, and wish them further success in their scientific work.

Commitment to quality – The University Library Service’s managers attended a leadership training

With the support of the National Cultural Fund, between the 28th and the 29th of May 2024, a management training course was held for the library managers of the University Library Service and the managers and staff of the ELTE University Library and Archives.

The two-day, develop effective management collaboration training provided participants with useful information on situational leadership and emotional intelligence. The training aimed to develop the leadership skills and competencies of leaders and to present tools, which are useful and work in practice. By applying the knowledge gained, their teams and the library as a whole will be able to improve their performance and effectiveness.
